Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Want to know more about the MTTP, but are afraid to ask! Here are some of the more common things people often want to find out.
- Q: Will this cost me anything?
- A: No, the service is free of charge and most of the students we work with are eligible for a free bus pass.
- Q: How long will the travel training take?
- A: The time it takes will depend upon the individual student.
- Q: Who decides when my child is ready to travel independently?
- A: The decision will be made between the parents, the students and the travel trainer.
- Q: What happens if I change my mind about the training?
- A: Each student has an individual trainer and they will discuss with the student and the parents how the training is going. If at any time anybody feels the need to stop then that can be arranged.
- Q: If I change my mind will my child be allowed back on transport?
- A: If you have any concerns then these can discussed and your child’s transport is not cancelled until everybody is happy with all aspects of their independence.
Once they have been trained the expectation is that they will continue their independence, unless circumstances change and then things can always be reviewed. - Q: What if there is a problem with the public transport?
- A: We teach all our students how to deal with problems which can arise when using public transport.
- Q: How do I apply for travel training?
- A: You can contact us by phone or email. Please see contact details for more information.
- Q: How do I apply for a free bus pass?
- A: You are welcome to contact us and we would be happy to help or you can ask for a Sensory Impairment/Learning Disabilities Application Form from any of the TFGM travel shops based in Shudehill, Wythenshawe and Altrincham. For more information click here.
- Q: Will travel training affect their education?
- A: Yes and No! Travel Training takes place mainly outside the school day, so it doesn’t affect their education. However because travel training enhances many areas of learning, by providing a practical setting for skills, it can be a positive influence on their education.
- Q: When will travel training take place?
- A: It takes place before and after school and sometimes during school hours. Sometimes we do extra-curricular activities in the holidays.
- Q: What if something happens after my child becomes independent?
- A: We always do a follow-up and are available to give help and advice.
